Definition

What are varicose veins?

Varicose veins are a common medical condition affecting approximately 1 in 4 American adults. These enlarged, twisted, and bulging veins result from malfunctioning valves, causing improper blood flow, pooling, and increased pressure within the veins. While often visible, varicose veins can also occur beneath the skin’s surface. VIE offers quick, safe, and non-surgical treatments to address this issue and improve quality of life effectively.

Treatment and Benefits

How We Treat Varicose Veins

VIE’s specially trained interventional radiologists perform minimally invasive varicose vein treatments in our outpatient centers. A specialized ultrasound examination identifies the cause of the vein problems and determines the best treatment approach.

Treatment options include:

  • Conservative management: Compression stockings, daily walking, weight loss, leg elevation, and anti-inflammatories. Venous supplements (diosmin and hesperidin) can relieve symptoms but do not treat the underlying issue.
  • Sclerotherapy: A chemical solution (sclerosant) is injected into the varicose veins, irritating the vein’s lining and causing it to close. Blood is rerouted through healthy veins, and treated veins begin to disappear within weeks.
  • Thermal Ablation: After administering local anesthesia, a tiny catheter is inserted into the vein, delivering radiofrequency energy to heat and close the vein wall. Blood is then rerouted through healthy veins.
  • Medical Adhesives (VenaSeal): A medical superglue (cyanoacrylate) is injected into the diseased vein through a small, ultrasound-guided catheter, sealing the vein shut with minimal anesthesia.
  • Microphlebectomy: After local anesthesia, special tools are inserted through small incisions to disrupt and remove small segments of varicose veins.

VIE’s highly effective, non-surgical varicose vein treatments relieve pain and restore mobility, allowing you to enjoy healthier-looking and feeling legs again.
